Detour 2020 - Hong Kong Carpentry Study & Hong Kong Wood Bench, Nov 2020
This design and research project aimed at studying the history of Hong Kong furniture with the intention to project its future. Using a 1960s dining chair found commonly in cha chan tang and tea houses as the subject, we analysed the formal and structural similarities and differences with other Danish modern design, and used that as the basis for the design of a new bench. We hope that by speculating the evolution of the once-forgotten design history, local craft and design can be rejuvenated. This limited edition ‘Hong Kong Wood Bench’ was handcrafted by local cabinetmakers using recycled timbers from different species of local Hong Kong trees, each having its own texture, temperature, grains, colours, and scent.
